About the Society:
The SGIEM has currently 83 members who are professionals of different disciplines (adult physicians, paediatricians, dietitians, lab scientists) involved in the diagnostic and follow-up of patients affected by inborn errors of metabolism. We also have associated members from different patient organizations. The official language of the SGIEM is English, as Switzerland is a multilingual country. SGIEM is the head organization of SG BOND, a network of professionals involved in the diagnosis and multidisciplinary management of rare diseases affecting bone and connective tissue and SALS (Schweizerische Arbeitsgemeinschaft für lysosomale Speicherkrankheiten), a network of professionals involved in the diagnosis and management of lysosomal storage diseases. Members of the SGIEM meet formally twice annually, with one meeting focussing on lysosomal storage diseases. The steering committee has about 4 meetings per year. We are concerned with all issues related to IEMs, especially networking of laboratory services and patient management, recommendations regarding newborn screening, development of common approaches to treatment and efforts to guarantee payment of laboratory analyses and special treatment products by health insurance organisations. Since 2004 we have held a half day annual meeting open to a broader group of professionals from Switzerland and neighbouring countries. Since 2014 we have organized a 2-day combined meeting with our Austrian colleagues that currently takes place every second year either in Austria or in Switzerland. In years without ASMM meetings, an SGIEM meeting with a general assembly in the morning followed by an educational meeting in the afternoon takes place. SGIEM has actively collaborated with KOSEK in the structuring of the IEM care network, which has resulted in the recognition of 4 sites of the Swiss Reference Centre for inborn errors of metabolism, complemented by the designation of 2 associated centres, as well as 12 care facilities (see the press release on the kosek website).
