    A meeting with a mix of medical science, research knowledge and the opportunity for young researchers to pitch an abstract.

  • About the Society:

    • Formed in 1988 in the Netherlands
    • Colleagues in Flanders joined in 1995
    • Number of members: 174
    • The Association aims to promote the quality of diagnosis, treatment and scientific research into genetic diseases in metabolism.
    • Two meetings are organized annually where, in addition to experienced researchers, young researchers are also encouraged to present their data; accreditation is requested for both meetings.
    • Prizes are awarded during these meetings. These include the prize for the best abstract and the Wadman-van Gennip Award, and incentive grants are awarded.
    • Every three years, the Christian de Duve Prize is presented for exceptional contributions to the field of inherited metabolic diseases.
    • The training committee also organizes an annual course for all interested healthcare professionals (paediatricians, internists, clinical chemists, clinical geneticists, laboratory specialists, nurses, and dietitians), whether in training or not.

    Dietitians Group
    A number of 12 metabolic dietitians from 6 University Medical Centres (UMC’s) in the Netherlands and 3 University Medical Centres in Belgium are among the ESN-members. Twice a year they have a meeting with their own professional group. These specific meetings are also open for non ESN members. www.dies.nu (dietitians)

    Adults Metabolic Physicians Group
    Approximately 17 metabolic physicians from 6 University Medical Centres (UMC’s) in the Netherlands and 3 University Medical Centres in Belgium are among the ESN-members. Twice a year they have a meeting with their own professional group. 
    The group of Internists for Adults with a Hereditary Metabolic Disease (INVEST) is an initiative of internists to promote the care for adult patients with a metabolic disease.

    Additional Information
    ESN currently has 174 members, including lab specialists, paediatricians, clinical geneticists, dietitians, nurse specialists and other non-medical professionals. All members work in the hereditary metabolic field.

Membership of the Society is open to all interested in and willing to support the aims of the Society.
