• About the Society:

  History and Overview
  The Japan Society for Inborn Errors of Metabolism, a general incorporated association, was established in 1965 as the “Pediatric Metabolic Research Group.” It was renamed the “Japan Society for Inborn Errors of Metabolism” in 1984 and became a general incorporated association in 2021. Since its founding, the Society has pursued activities aimed at advancing diagnosis, treatment, and research in inborn errors of metabolism. Alongside developments in molecular biology and genetics, it has played a pioneering role in both academic and clinical fields. Past presidents include Teruo Kitagawa, Keiya Tada, Yoshikatsu Eto, Fumio Endo, Hiroyuki Ida, Toshiyuki Fukao, and Toranosuke Okuyama. Since November 2022, Kimitoshi Nakamura (Professor, Department of Pediatrics, Graduate School of Life Sciences, Kumamoto University) has served as President. The Society has approximately 700 members, including physicians, researchers, nurses, dietitians, psychologists, and patient family associations, representing a diverse range of professions.

  Academic Activities
  The Society holds an annual scientific meeting, providing a platform for the broad sharing of research findings and clinical experiences. It is also actively engaged in international exchange. In 2025, it will host the International Congress of Inborn Errors of Metabolism (ICIEM 2025, Congress President: Kimitoshi Nakamura) at the Kyoto International Conference Center, striving to strengthen international collaboration and foster young researchers.

  Educational Activities
  In the educational field, the “Japanese Society for Inborn Errors of Metabolism Seminar” has been held every summer since 2005, aiming to disseminate foundational knowledge to general pediatricians and residents. Furthermore, advanced seminars are also conducted, providing opportunities for highly specialized education.

  Clinical and Social Role
  The Society actively works on congenital metabolic disorders, which are rare and intractable diseases. This includes developing diagnostic and treatment guidelines, establishing patient registry systems, securing supply systems for specialized therapeutic drugs and formulas, eliminating drug and device lags, and developing new diagnostic methods and treatments. Furthermore, it contributes to improving the healthcare system by addressing issues within the insurance-based medical care system, the Pediatric Chronic Specific Diseases and Designated Intractable Diseases systems, and making policy recommendations to the government.
