  • About the Society:

In January 2013, paediatric metabolic medicine was included in the list of medical specialisations in Poland: the first (and currently serving her third term) National Consultant in this field was Prof. Jolanta Sykut-Cegielska, and the number of specialists is increasing every year by several more joining metabolic centres in subsequent provinces, enabling patients with IEM to receive care closer to their place of residence.

In 2014, the former Metabolic Section of the Polish Paediatric Society was transformed into the Polish Society of Inborn Errors of Metabolism (PTWWM). PTWWM brings together people involved in the diagnosis, treatment and care of patients with IEMs – these are still people from many medical specialities: physicians, biochemists, geneticists, dietitians and psychologists.

The objectives of the Society are:

    1. To work towards the integration of all centres and individuals involved in the field of IEMs in Poland,

    2. To improve the model of care for patients with IEMs and their families,

    3. To popularise and promote knowledge about IEMs among the general public,

    4. To shape social and ethical attitudes among the members of the Society and to promote the principles of medical deontology and ensure their observance,

    5. Conducting multi-centre scientific research and expanding knowledge about IEMs,

    6. Improving the professional qualifications of people working with patients with IEMs,

    7. Cooperating with scientific societies and domestic and foreign organisations working for patients with IEMs,

    8. Educating patients with IEMs and their families about issues related to the disease.

PTWWM is a forum for specialists to meet: conferences that began in the 1990s as meetings in Pułtusk, since 2008 as the Eastern European Metabolic Academy (EEMA), are now regular PTWWM conferences with foreign guests, interspersed every other year with workshops dedicated to IEMs. The number of registered members of PTWWM currently exceeds 100. PTWWM, together with the Polish Society of Perinatal Medicine, cooperates with the scientific journal the Journal of Mother and Child.
