Inherited Metabolic Disease in Adults: A Clinical Guide
Carla E.M. Hollak and Robin Lachmann

As clinical management of inherited metabolic diseases (IMDs) has improved, more patients affected by these conditions are surviving into adulthood. This trend, coupled with the widespread recognition that IMDs can present differently and for the first time during adulthood, makes the need for a working knowledge of these diseases more important than ever. Inherited Metabolic Disease in Adults offers an authoritative clinical guide to the adult manifestations of these challenging and myriad conditions. These include both the classic pediatric-onset conditions and a number of new diseases that can manifest at any age. It is the first book to give a clear and concise overview of how this group of conditions affects adult patients, a that topic will become a growing imperative for physicians across primary and specialized care.

History

Following the 2nd European Adult Metabolic Course held in Paris, January 2010, a group of physicians with an interest in adults with inborn errors of metabolism was convened. This group met formally at the 2010 SSIEM Annual Symposium in Istanbul and proposed to the SSIEM council that an adult specific plenary session and workshop be included in subsequent annual Symposia. Consequently these sessions were featured for the first time at the 2011 SSIEM Annual Symposium in Geneva and were considered to be of great value.

Aims

  • To promote research in the field of inborn errors of metabolism affecting adult patients
  • To provide a collegiate group and to facilitate communication between physicians looking after adult patients with inborn errors of metabolism
  • To promote awareness of these rare disorders that are increasingly recognized in adult medical practice
  • To provide education and training for physicians looking after adult patients with inborn errors of metabolism

The adult metabolic physicians group organises a symposium and plenary.poster sessions dedicated to inborn errors of metabolism in adults at the annual SSIEM scientific conference, to which all members of the SSIEM are welcome to attend.

Thank you for visiting the SSIEM Adult Metabolic Physicians group website. We are a subgroup of physicians within the SSIEM looking after adult patients with inborn errors of metabolism. Meetings of the group are held during SSIEM meetings/symposia in adult specific sessions.

This website provides information regarding our membership and clinical units, relevant events, as well as education and training in the clinical care of adults with inborn errors of metabolism.
