  • About the Society:

PSCP was established in 2005 and in 2019 a working group ‘Pakistan-Inherited Metabolic Diseases-Network’ (Pak-IMD-Net) was formed.

The goals of the Working Group are to support the following activities in the field of IMDs across Pakistan:

    – Diagnostics and newborn screening
    – Scientific research
    – Knowledge dissemination

     Objectives of Pak-IMD-Net are:

    – To encourage and support training for technologists and pathologists in the area of Biochemical Genetics.
    – To share expertise and IMD cases by networking and regular meetings.
    – To organize hand-on workshops and training courses for interpreting investigations for diagnosing IMDs.
    – To be responsible for an area of the Pak-IMD-Net on PSCP website for teaching and learning.
    – To advance the education of individuals analyzing and reporting cases with IMDs.
    – To enhance and update knowledge of health care professionals regarding screening, diagnosis, management and prevention of IMDs.
    – To promote research in the area of IMDs.
    – To emphasize the need and promote research in IMDs in Pakistan through partnership with funding bodies.
    – To raise awareness of inherited metabolic disorders and newborn screening, new diagnostic methodologies and patient care of IMDs in Pakistan.
    – Capacity building of the local pathologist and allied health professionals to develop expanded newborn screening in Pakistan
    – To promote and advance education amongst healthcare professionals interested in metabolic medicine
    – To support patients and family organizations
    – To promote collaboration nationally and internationally in the field of IMDs

    Currently, we have 37 members.

Membership of the group is open to all people, and it is free.

    Dietitians Group
We do not have dietitians specialised in a specific area of dietetics; there is no specialization of Metabolic dietitians. A physician needs to be a doctor and a dietitian at the same time. In future, we plan to conduct educational activities for the dietitians.

    Additional Information
    Challenges of Pakistan:
    – Large population
    – High cousin marriage rate
    – No newborn Screening program
    – High rate of <5 yrs
    – Limited resources, just two diagnostic facilities for IMDs (1 in civilian sector only)
    – Rare experts for IMD diagnosis and management, hence, samples are sent outside country for testing

Pak-IMD-Net aims to build capacity of our local pathologist and allied health professionals, raise awareness about IMDs and NBS in both healthcare providers and general public, advocate for national NBS program, collaborate with the industry partners to improve the accessibility and equity of management/FSMPs, improve the overall care of the IMDs patients.
