About the Society:
The Saudi Society of Medical Genetics (SSMG) was officially established on 10/2/1429 AH (17/2/2008 AD) under the umbrella of the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS). It is recognized as the first scientific society in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia—and indeed in the Arab and Islamic world—specialized in the field of genetics.
The founding committee included representatives from major national institutions such as King Faisal Specialist Hospital, the Ministry of Health, the Armed Forces Hospital, and the National Guard Hospital, encompassing a diverse group of professionals—physicians, laboratory technologists, and researchers—specialized in genetic, metabolic, and biochemical medicine.
The committee’s work progressed on two levels:
1. Scientific and awareness activities conducted in collaboration with the Saudi Pediatric Society, including scientific clubs, workshops, and conferences focusing on genetics, metabolic diseases, and biochemical disorders.
2. Preparations for establishing an independent society, including defining its mission, vision, goals, and long-term programs aimed at advancing clinical genetics and metabolic medicine in the Kingdom.
Today, the SSMG continues to grow as a leading professional body promoting education, research, and collaboration in medical, metabolic, and biochemical genetics. It actively fosters partnerships with local and international societies, aiming to enhance genetic services, support practitioners, and raise public awareness across the Kingdom and beyond.
The Society currently has around 300 active members representing a wide range of disciplines, unified by a shared commitment to advancing the understanding, diagnosis, and management of genetic and metabolic disorders in Saudi Arabia.
Dietitians Group
The Dietitians Group organized a workshop for metabolic dietitians, and there are also parent support groups available through WhatsApp.
