As places are limited to 40 delegates for each course, if the courses are oversubscribed there may be a selection process
Decisions will be made within 4 weeks of the closing date.

Applications are open to clinicians and laboratory scientists training in inherited metabolic disease.

There is no registration fee for the Academy course but participants will pay their own travel and accommodation costs. Lunches on the 2nd and 3rd and evening meal on the 2nd will be provided.

As in previous years the SSIEM Academy clinical and a laboratory courses will be held over 2 days in parallel.

The programmes for both courses will cover similar topics and some sessions will be combined.

Teaching will as interactive as possible and in addition to lectures will involve workshops and case discussions.

    Day 1

    Joint with Laboratory Scientists
    Lecture: Causes & presentations of hyperammonaemia
    Workshops:
    Investigations of hyperammonaemia
    Interpretation of amino acid patterns

    Clinicians Only
    Lecture: Management of UCDs

    Joint with Laboratory Scientists
    Lecture: Cholestatic Metabolic Liver Disease

    Day 2

    Clinicians Only
    Lectures:
    - Diagnosis & management of PKU
    - Diagnosis & management of homocystinuria
    - Diagnosis & management of MSUD

    Joint with Laboratory Scientists
    - Selected case discussions submitted by delegates
    - Quiz


Laboratory Scientist Programme

    Day1

    Joint with Clinicians
    Lecture: Causes & presentations of hyperammonaemia
    Workshops:
    - Investigations of hyperammonaemia
    - Interpretation of amino acid patterns

    Laboratory Scientists only
    Concurrent Workshops:
    - Methionine & folic acid disorders: transulfylation & remethylation pathways
    - Techniques, pitfalls & secondary changes in amino acid patterns
    - Rare compounds

    Joint with Clinicians
    Lecture: - Cholestatic metabolic liver disease

    Day 2

    Laboratory Scientists only
    Concurrent workshops as for Day 1

    Joint with Clinicians
    - Selected case discussions submitted by delegates
    - Quiz

 

Accepted delegates will be contacted in July and will be asked to submit an abstract for a case presentation on a topic related to the Academy.

SSIEM Academy 2013, Lyon, April 2013: Initial announcement

In 2013 we're planning to hold the Academy Course in Lyon in April. The dates and details of the venue and programme will be published here in September 2012.
